AFD has been present in the Dominican Republic for 25 years and provides technical and financial solutions to support programs with strong social and environmental impacts and large-scale sustainable infrastructure projects. Located in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic has more than 10 million inhabitants. Its economic strategy is oriented towards tourism, the pillar of the national economy, agricultural production and mining exports. However, the country still depends heavily on the international economic environment, mainly North American, the infrastructure is insufficient and inequalities persist, with 41% of the population living below the poverty line. Not to mention the country's biodiversity, which is threatened by the excessive exploitation of natural resources.
