The choice of feminist development
With hard-won victories for women's rights being reversed and gender discrimination afflicting sectors ranging from education and employment to health and wealth, AFD has redoubled its efforts to move towards gender equality, as part of a broader strategy to reinforce social cohesion.

No sphere of public life is free of gender discrimination, and it affects not only girls and women; it hinders the social and economic development of entire societies.

Around the world, hard-won progress has been reversed in recent years, with domestic abuse exacerbated by Covid-19, conflict and entrenched attitudes of domination. There has also been a resurgence of efforts to dominate women’s sexual and reproductive rights.

Tackling such reversals and aiming to reduce gender inequality are central to AFD’s development strategy. As a resolutely feminist institution, we back the education and empowerment of women and girls, and incorporate gender issues in all the projects we support.

As you’ll see in this video, it’s all part of our strategy that aims for gender equality and social cohesion in general.
