AFD has been supporting the Republic of Suriname since 2008 in the construction and operationalization of the Albina hospital in order to improve access to healthcare for the populations of eastern Suriname.
On Friday 1 December, a delegation led by the Surinamese Minister of Health, Dr Amar Ramadhin, the French Ambassador in Suriname and Guyana, Nicolas de Lacoste, and the Director of the Suriname-Guyana Agency of the Agence française de développement, Pierre Bourguignon, visited the Marwina Hospital in Albina as part of the relaunch of the AFD project aiming at supporting the hospital. An amendment to the financing agreement between the Republic of Suriname and AFD was signed in June 2023 to finalize construction works at the hospital.

An amendment to the financing agreement between the Republic of Suriname and AFD was signed in June 2023 to finalize construction works at the hospital.

An expert mission carried out in April 2023 resulted in a report setting out the actions to be implemented to ensure that the Marwina Hospital becomes fully operational. The conclusions of this report were formally validated by all stakeholders last Friday.

Five strategic areas have been identified to ensure that the hospital can provide access to first-line care services as soon as possible. These include a 24-hour emergency service, strengthening the maternity ward and developing outpatient care, including dental care.

Collaboration with other hospitals (in particular the Centre Hospitalier de l’Ouest Guyanais), as well as the RGD and MZ, is key to ensuring that the hospital becomes operational.
Construction works will be started at the beginning of 2024 and the first results will be visible at the end of 2024.

AFD has been supporting the Republic of Suriname since 2008 in the construction and operationalization of the Albina hospital in order to improve access to healthcare for the populations of eastern Suriname. A €15 million loan had already enabled the hospital to be built in 2017.
