While the world is struggling to cope with the coronavirus epidemic, the initiatives led by NGOs in their daily fight to stop the spread of HIV hold lessons about the most effective methods of prevention and screening. One example is the program launched by Coalition PLUS to get the communities the most affected by AIDS more involved in the fight against the epidemic.

Diffusing good health practices to the general public is a big challenge when fighting pandemics and malnutrition, or when promoting family planning. The international NGO Gret, which is specialized in the fight against poverty and inequality around the world, is helping to meet that challenge. In Burkina Faso, it has set up a system to facilitate family access to health information using technology to which almost everyone has access: text messaging.

As part of a new initiative launched by the French President and his African peers, Agence Française de Développement announces the launch of “COVID-19 – Health in Common” – a €1.2 billion initiative in response to the worldwide public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This French program is part of a European effort to mount a targeted, partnership-based response to this unprecedented crisis facing developing countries. It complements the work of multilateral and European donors, and prioritizes the African continent.

AFD is funding, along with INSERM, a system to improve health surveillance and care for suspected cases of Covid-19 in five African countries (Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Mali and Sénégal). This system – called “Aphro-Cov” – has no connection whatsoever with the controversy generated by a news segment broadcast on French television channel LCI, on Thursday, April 2, 2020.
