This project aims to structure a long-term strategic partnership for higher education courses focusing on agroecology and sustainable food at USSEIN in Senegal.
Train future professionals on the agroecological transition of food systems in Senegal – this is the ambition of the PETTAL project, which was selected for the first edition of the “Academia Partnerships Africa-France” programme. Led by the Université du Sine Saloum El-Hâdj Ibrahima Niass (USSEIN) in Senegal and the Institut Agro (Montpellier) in France, it aims to set up a training programme from Bachelor/Licence to PhD/Doctorate level, focused on agroecology and sustainable food.
Context

To drive the transition to more sustainable production and consumption patterns, the Senegalese government has opted for the  path of agroecology through the “Green Emerging Senegal Plan” and decided to leverage agriculture to boost the country’s growth. To implement this plan, it can draw on a network of public and private stakeholders from the “Dynamics for an Agro-ecological Transition in Senegal” (DyTAES) alliance.
Created in 2013, the Université du Sine Saloum El-Hâdj Ibrahima Niass (USSEIN) specialises in agricultural professions and has a strong presence in the (3 campuses across the country). It contributes to training actors who could modernise agriculture through scientific knowledge, advanced techniques and the local  knowledge that the university helps to transmit.
Under a partnership with Agreenium led by the Institut Agro (Montpellier), USSEIN developed 35 job-oriented Bachelor’s/Licence programmes between 2014 and 2019, The PETTAL project follows on from this partnership.
