Type of financing
Deteriorating health conditions in Armenia over the past 30 years, the pandemic, and the consequences of the two most recent wars have made structural improvements to the health system essential. Led by the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), the project helps improve the quality of health care in the Syunik region by strengthening health facilities, developing health professionals’ skills, and empowering civil society.
Context
- Association Santé Arménie, a civil society organization and consortium member, defines the scientific and medical strategy.
- Fondation Santé Arménie, the local civil society partner, is responsible for implementing, managing, and monitoring the project on the ground.
- WINNET, a local civil society partner in Syunik, leads efforts to strengthen civil society in the region.
Description
Armenia’s health system faces numerous challenges. Access to care is highly unequal, with a two-tier system that excludes the most vulnerable. Poor-quality care and inadequate professional training have also fueled growing public distrust of health professionals. An assessment of local needs identified improving health in the threatened border region of Syunik as a priority, through access to quality care and a stronger civil society.
The project aims to improve the overall health of Syunik’s Armenian population and, in turn, their living conditions. Health is essential to social progress and to reducing poverty and inequalities, including gender inequalities. It also contributes to economic growth, stability, and social cohesion.
Impacts
- Strengthening health facilities and their capacity to provide a wider range of more accessible health services.
- Developing health professionals’ skills, particularly through the sharing of French expertise, to improve the quality and acceptability of care close to where rural communities live.
- Strengthening civil society and empowering citizens to take an active role in improving their own health and reducing gender inequalities.
