Supporting pastoralism in Countries of the South: courses of action for sustainable development. AFD – CIRAD – Pastoralism Working Group position paper

Published on

Kamikazz / Gret

The various forms of pastoralism help address the major challenges (such as food sovereignty, climate change adaptation, and social inclusion) faced by the approximately 100 countries worldwide where this form of livestock farming exists. In each context, pastoralists’ contribution is much greater when public policies and investments are designed and implemented together with all stakeholders, over time and at the different local, national, and even subregional levels of governance.
In this position paper, the signatory institutions express their shared commitments to support private and public stakeholders working with pastoral communities, particularly in developing countries

Since 2023, French organizations working in Countries of the South have formed a Working Group on Pastoralism. This group brings together Acting for Life (AFL), Agronomes et vétérinaires sans frontières (AVSF), CIRAD, GRET, Inter-réseaux développement rural, and IRAM. Its objective is to share experiences and circulate information, strengthen links between stakeholders, and participate in the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), particularly by supporting the engagement of herder organizations and their national and regional partners. The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralism calls for recognizing the importance of pastoralists' contributions to food security and sovereignty, climate change adaptation, social cohesion and peace in rural territories, and biodiversity protection worldwide.
