
Education is essential for child development, yet it is faced with many barriers. In addition to school dropout and late-age entry, there are many obstacles: overcrowded classrooms, limited learning time, unfavorable social climate and inappropriate teaching methods. These challenges are even more complicated for vulnerable students, especially girls, who are faced with gender stereotypes, sexual violence and early pregnancies. Children with disabilities or from community minorities are also discriminated against.
The EJO project launched by Play International provides a promising response to these challenges. This major initiative for education through sport has had a positive effect on the lives of more than 80,000 children in Burundi, Kosovo, Liberia and Senegal.
Building on a resounding success in Burundi in 2016, Play International is working on an innovative project that aims to combine formal and informal education to improve continuity in educational provision for children. The EJO project has four main lines of action:
- Field assessments and co-creation of educational content based on the socioeconomic context in the various regions
- Training for education professionals in aspects of education through sport
- Organization of "Playdagogy" sessions to promote inclusive sports activities during and outside school hours
- Evaluation of the impact of the teaching methods and projects deployed in collaboration with a university laboratory
Founded in 1999, PLAY International is a pioneering NGO in the field of development and education through sport.
Through sport, PLAY International creates collective solutions for education, inclusion and well-being.
Its action in the field supports a deep-seated conviction: sport is both a right and a way of solving our societies' problems.
PLAY has joined forces with a number of international NGOs, including Futur au Présent, Mercy Corps and Bibliothèques Sans Frontières, to deploy the project alongside local partner associations.
Indeed, at least eight civil society organizations will benefit from activities to strengthen their pedagogical skills, in order to offer socio-educational activities to children, as well as structural support to ensure the sustainability of the project.
- Increase in out-of-school education for children through the development of socio-sports activities
- Promotion of inclusive school by rallying the support of teaching staff and children around the importance of schooling and the fight against discriminatory behavior
- Development of an ecosystem of actors from institutions, communities and associations for Sport and Development around the world
