The situation remains alarming in the Philippines: one child in five is a victim of sexual violence, 70% of them girls. CAMELEON runs a comprehensive program to combat this violence.
Description
Most violence against children is perpetrated by someone close to them within the family circle. These alarming figures know no borders: violence is just as insidious and taboo in France. In response, CAMELEON has worked for 26 years directly with girls who are victims of sexual violence from the Western Visayas Region, helping them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society so they become autonomous, empowered and responsible adults. CAMELEON also works with their families and communities in partnership with local institutions. Its holistic, cross-cutting and innovative approach has been recognized as impactful. Phase 3 of the project aims to strengthen CAMELEON's programs and practices, as well as stakeholders' capacities, in order to sustain and roll out the CAMELEON model in France.
Partners
CAMELEON Philippines, which originated the project proposal, was founded in 1997 by Laurence Ligier. For more than 26 years, CAMELEON has welcomed, protected and supported young girls who are victims of sexual violence. Awareness-raising and advocacy work is carried out with communities and authorities on children’s rights and the fight against violence against children, while also promoting children’s education and the socio-economic development of communities.
Impacts
The lasting recovery and reintegration into society of young girls who are victims of sexual violence, so that they become autonomous, empowered and responsible adults. Families, communities and local partners are engaged in the fight against sexual violence, while all beneficiaries become agents of change. CAMELEON is recognized as an expert in child protection, enabling it to sustain and roll out its model in France.
CAMELEON Association France
Founded in France in 1998, CAMELEON is an international solidarity association, recognized as a charitable and welfare organization. It owns the CAMELEON “brand,” raises funds, manages communications, and oversees project monitoring and evaluation. CAMELEON also works in France on prevention, awareness-raising and citizenship education, helping children and young people understand children’s rights and violence prevention.
Sustainable Development Goals
Good Health and Well-being
Goal 3 seeks to guarantee health and well-being by improving reproductive, maternal, and child health and by reducing the main communicable, noncommunicable, environmental, and mental diseases. Progress depends on prevention systems to reduce health risks, universal access to health coverage and services, investment in research and development of vaccines and medicines, and stronger risk-management capacities in developing countries.
