AFD is supporting Kenya’s plan to provide affordable, sustainable electricity by retrofitting diesel-powered mini-grids with solar energy.
Context
To ensure universal access connection to the most remote areas, which are furthest from the national grid, the Kenyan Power Lighting Company (KPLC) operates decentralized mini-grids powered by diesel generators.
This solution is unsatisfactory because the average cost of generating electricity from these systems is expensive and not sustainable.
Description
The aim of the project is to retrofit diesel-powered generators to work together with Solar in rural areas.
The project has two components:
- An investment component to hybridize 5 off grid stations with solar PV plants.
- A capacity-building component
The project will hybridize the following 5 mini-grid stations: Eldas, Elwak, Habaswein, Merti and Wajir.
Impacts
This project hopes to:
- Provide universal access through the supply of reliable and affordable electricity in rural areas.
- Reduction in the operational costs.
- Reduce fuel consumption by 60%, which will assist in lowering carbon emissions.
- Promote the use of renewable energy sources.
