Phase II of the Ahmedabad metro

Gujarat is one of the richest and most dynamic states in India, with a population of 65 millions and an annual growth of 8.2% over the last ten years. With more than 8 million inhabitants, Ahmedabad is the economic, cultural and historical heart of the state. Gandhinagar, 20 km north of Ahmedabad, is the administrative capital of Gujarat. The connectivity between these two cities is currently ensured by road infrastructure only and, in the absence of public transport, private transport (car, two wheels) is dominant.

In order to structure urban development around a mass-transit corridor, the Government of Gujarat decided to extend the Ahmedabad metro network towards Gandhinagar. The project is part of a so-called Transit Oriented Development (TOD) approach, where the transport system is developed as an instrument of urban development rather than to meet immediate demand. This approach is aims at the emergence of a more energy-efficient urban mobility system.

The project will extend the 28 km metro network in the center of Ahmedabad to the center of Gandhinagar. The corridor has 22 stations and will be connected to the first phase of the network. The expected ridership is 116,000 passengers per day at commissioning and over 335,000 per day after 30 years. 

Furthermore, the project aims:

• To limit the increase in travel times and the costs of using private vehicles,
• To limit the increase in emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases (savings of -48,000 TCO2eq/year on average),
• To promote the densification of urban development in the metro's catchment area.
