AFD and the Pacific Ocean
Published on
The diversity among the Pacific Ocean region’s territories aside, common issues tend to suggest that an ocean-wide regional development approach would help foster discussion among stakeholders, identify sustainable regional solutions and improve community living standards.
This is why AFD is strengthening its presence in the Pacific Ocean and has set up Regional Headquarters. The Headquarters oversee the operations from New Caledonia in Melanesia (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia), in Polynesia (Samoa, Niue, Tonga, Tuvalu, Wallis & Futuna, Cook Islands and French Polynesia), in Micronesia (Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia and Kiribati) and in Timor Leste. AFD promotes:
- An Ocean of resilience: assist with the new French local governance framework and energy and environmental transition policy
- An Ocean of inclusivity: provide communities with a decent standard of living while paying heed to their traditional lifestyles
- An Ocean of prospects: facilitate the transition to sustainable and innovative economies
- An Ocean in Common: promote French Pacific territories’ integration into their regional environment and help French stakeholders make impactful contributions to it.
