What is a sustainable agriculture sector?

In developing countries, many farmers live in poverty. How can the situation be reversed? Is it possible to give priority to environmentally friendly agricultural practices while allowing everyone to earn a decent livelihood by selling quality products? This is the objective of a sustainable agriculture sector.

The agriculture sector works on the basis of three areas:
- Solidarity: help farmers form groups so that they can defend their interests better and pool the sale of their products and purchases;
- Economy: promote geographical indications and fair trade, which ensure that prices are stable and that producers earn a fair income;
- Environment: integrate agricultural practices that preserve water and soils. AFD is supporting this approach and helps improve public agricultural policies to lift farmers out of poverty.
