Engaging the potential of agroecology to support the transition of food and agricultural systems towards more sustainable systems in Southeast Asia, in particular in Laos, Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Contexte
Agriculture in the countries of the Mekong region is currently at a crossroads, between a headlong rush towards input and capital-intensive agro-industrial models, and innovative agro-ecological system options to take better account of environmental and social imperatives and the challenges of sustainability and climate change. Identifying alternative models and mechanisms to support large-scale transition is a major challenge.
Descriptif
The Agroecology and Safe food System Transitions in South-East Asia (ASSET) project aims to make a significant contribution to the agro-ecological transition process in South-East Asia, by integrating value chain approaches to the quality of the products resulting from these practices. This is the second phase of the ACTAE project (ACcompagner la Transition Agro-Ecologique dans la région du Grand Mekong region) granted by AFD's Foreign States Committee on 19/11/2014. The project benefits from a delegation of funds from the European Union, obtained following a call for proposals under the DeSIRA initiative (Development-Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture).
Impacts
The main expected outcomes are as follows:
- Strengthening and expanding the ALiSEA alliance (Agroecology learning alliance in South-East Asia) so that it can act as a formalized and open coalition of actors united by a shared vision of transitions towards sustainable agricultural and food systems.
- Co-design of innovations involving technical, organizational and institutional changes institutional changes;
- Strengthen consumer and public demand for an agricultural sector and food products and food products that take greater account of environmental and social sustainability sustainability and food safety;
- Reinforced dialogue on existing agricultural, food and health policies, and health policies at local, national and regional (ASEAN) levels.
