A new hospital for Sofala Province

There is currently no intermediate infrastructure between the urban health centres and the central hospital in Beira in Sofala province, in central Mozambique. This lack of an intermediate hospital means that the central hospital is saturated with first- and second-level patients, and prevents it from concentrating on tertiary care. The 5% increase in primary care centres since 2009, and the introduction of extended services in some of them, has only increased the need for intermediate referral hospitals in the province. Beira General Hospital will be the first hospital to provide secondary healthcare, covering the districts of Beira, Nhamatanda, Dondo and Gorongosa.

The Geral da Beira hospital is designed for a nominal capacity of 290 beds and covers an area of 15,195 m², in two floors, on a 6.2 ha site.

Beira General Hospital will serve the districts of Beira, Dondo and Muanza, which represent a population of 640,000 people (740,000 expected by 2024). It will serve as a first point of referral for the health centres in these districts and act as a filter for the central hospital.

The emphasis is on physical accessibility to healthcare services (infrastructure and equipment), the smooth running of establishments and the performance of the services offered.

The programme will purchase the equipment needed to run the two hospitals and maintain it for three years. It will support the introduction of a hospital management system in the areas of human resources, quality of care and the operation of the referral system.
