This project's aim is to boost the efficiency of the electricity sector by sustainably raising the skill level of its human resources and increasing the participation of women within the Ethiopian Electric Power company (EEP).
Context
Ethiopia's electricity sector is experiencing strong growth; between 2008 and 2023, Ethiopia increased its generation capacity from 755 MW to 5,200 MW. Ethiopia now aims to increase its production capacity to17,056 MW by 2030.
Ethiopian Electric Power Company (EEP) is implementing this growth policy. EEP has an in-house training center, built in the 1970s, but the training center's activity has declined sharply in recent years, due to a lack of suitable equipment and a clearly defined training policy.
Description
The sector's human resources is heavily male-dominated, with women accounting for just 16% of EEP's workforce, where they mainly occupy administrative or highly stereotyped positions (cooks, cleaners, hostesses, etc.).
EEP estimates that it will need to recruit 20,600 new employees by 2030 out of a current workforce of 7,400. EEP is also facing an aging workforce, with 2,000 employees (24% of the total) due to retire between now and 2030.
This project will cover the investments needed to build the new EEP training center, which will be located in Debre Zeit.
The center will include several pedagogical buildings, administrative offices, three dormitories (one of which is reserved for female learners), a clinic, a dining area and a sports field to improve the learning environment and reinforce informal exchanges between learners.
The center will also be equipped with recent training equipment adapted to the technologies installed on the Ethiopian network.
Impacts
By providing support to the main operator, EEP, this project will:
- Improve the quality of electricity service, a key factor in the development of the economic fabric and the well-being of the population.
- Help to improve working conditions for women within EEP, increase the number of women in technical and managerial positions, and the number of women and girls in technical training courses.
- Enable EEP to manage its human capital efficiently and proactively.
